Researchers from Utrecht University are ranked second in the Geography category of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (also known as the Shanghai Ranking). Only the University of Oxford is ahead in this research field. Utrecht University as a whole, is ranked number 51 in the world, making it the highest ranked Dutch university.
In the internationally influential Shanghai Ranking institutions and researchers are compared on, among other things, citation scores, articles in prestigious scientific journals such as Nature and Science and Nobel Prize and Field Medal winners. A part that counts heavily is the highly-cited index, which consists of the 1% most frequently cited scientists of the past ten years.
The category ‘Geography’ includes research published in dozens of different scientific journals, mainly in the sciences and social sciences. The researchers involved cover a wide range of disciplines across several faculties of Utrecht University.
