Construction of Uithof tram line should not be delayed

Last updated 6 years ago by UtrechtCentral.com

Transport Minister Schulz refuses to transfer euro 110 million in funds towards the construction of a proposed tram line between ‘De Uithof’ and the city center.

While the laying of the groundwork is already more or less underway, the minister said that a decisive choice must be made by 2013 whether to continue with construction or remain using bus transport.

In any case, the financing for the continued construction of the route needs to be in on time if work is to continue or else alternatives will have to be proposed.

Whether or not construction continues is heavily dependent on the broadening of the A27 motorway. Should that proposal fall through, then progress is very much likely.

De Uithof is a district in Utrecht mainly covered by university faculty buildings where transport to and from the location is in constant flow. Bus transport, although effective, requires such a great number of buses that traffic congestion in the city center is a frequent occurrence.
