Utrecht High Tech High Flyers

Two out of the nine most active Start Ups in the Netherlands right now are based in Utrecht

The European Commission is in the process of promoting the startup programmes in Europe in an attempt to take on Silicon Valley in the United States at their own game.

But in order to boost their markets and raise their profile across the globe, they need to be more than just a simple startup and more like an entire ecosystem with a constant stream of entrepreneurs, companies and capital invested in them.

The Netherlands in particular seems to be very successful in promoting their Start Ups and this is possibly because Dutch people are direct and are not afraid to provide honest feedback and are then happy to try out new services.

It does help of course that the infra structure is available in The Netherlands to help them succeed. The Netherlands enjoys the sixth-fastest internet speeds in the world. To make it a better place for startups, the government have appointed Neelie Kroes, as the country’s startup envoy named Startup Delta.

Of course, you need other things like technical infrastructure, access to talent, closeness to markets, and the ease of communication which we have here.

It is challenging as a Start Up to attract traditional bank financing because in many cases you don’t have sufficient equity or collateral to secure a loan. However, it’s better to focus on the funding amount initially rather that funding strategy. Crowdfunding is a very popular way to raise funds and we have mentioned that in articles on the site before.

As I said two of the top nine are based here in the city.

Utrecht Inc

Was founded by Bart Verhulst in 2009, and is a business incubator that specializes in growing tech startups during their first years of existence. It provides an environment and programme for startups to build innovative products, develop teams, meet experts and like-minded entrepreneurs, attract funding and grow a successful business. It’s worth mentioning here that Utrecht Inc has supported over 100 startups so far.

Then there is Holland Startup

Holland Startup funds companies with reliable business fundamentals that can maintain a long-term approach to value creation. Founded by Maurice Bakker, and Robbert Jan Hanse, the team has over 50 years of experience in building companies.

Utrecht continues to be an innovative high tech city, with entrepreneurs who are prepared to invest in business and who promote growth.

It is the place to be if you have vision and a dream to be successful. All you need is the right idea and the worlds your oyster. The hard bit of course, is to find that right idea!
