IMPAKT about to hit Utrecht

There’s less than a week till the festival!

IMPAKT will bring you an extraordinary international line-up and a great exhibition this year. Expect to learn more about algorithms of all shapes and sizes in talks, panels, screenings, games and exhibitions.

Exhibition: Algorithmic Superstructures

Opening 24 October – 17:00 – 19:00

Fotodok/Casco and IMPAKT Centre for Media Culture

This will carry on until 11 November

Opening hours during the festival: 10:00 – 18:00

Opening hours after the festival: Wednesday- Sunday 13:00 – 18:00

Thirteen international artists, duos and collectives share their perspectives on the algorithmic superstructures that challenge the fabrics of society. They illustrate how algorithms shape our thinking, our perception and value system, and speak to a need for accountability and new forms of public democracy.

The festival will be opened by a festive introduction to the festival that includes

writer Chris Keulemans, and artists Coralie Vogelaar and Mario Klingemann, all leading up to the opening lecture by urbanist and writer Adam Greenfield who will talk about Radical Technologies: The Design of Everyday Life and the need for a critical awareness of the technologies we embrace, as well as the modes of resistance available to us.

Eliot Higgins of Bellingcat

Online fact-checking in a Post-truth world

27 October – Het Huis Utrecht, Theaterzaal

17:00 – 18:30

During the festival Eliot Higgins will give a lecture about the methods and techniques of the open source investigation collective Bellingcat. Higgins is the founder of Bellingcat, also called “the rockstars of online investigative journalism” after their ground-breaking discoveries in the MH-17 disaster, the Syrian civil war and, only recently, in the Skripal poisoning case.

Metahaven – An Exit (Revisited)

27 October at Het Huis Utrecht, Theaterzaal

20:00 – 21:00

Join IMPAKT for a keynote by the world-renowned Metahaven, who are currently having a museum survey in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. They will be giving a presentation about the possibility of exiting the superstructure. The work of Metahaven consists of filmmaking, writing, design, and installations, and is united conceptually by interests in poetry, storytelling, digital superstructures, and propaganda.

SkinGazers by Omsk Social Club

Introduction: 13:30 – 16:00

24 October at Het Huis Utrecht, Koepelzaal

Throughout IMPAKT festival you can take part in the orchestrated life experiences of SkinGazers, a new game by Omsk Social Club. SkinGazers will put your temporary body in context with the universe’s vastness, allowing irrationality to invade your technorationalists way of living for a moment or a lifetime.
