Local ladies star as Dutch Women win the Champions Trophy for the seventh time

The Dutch hockey players have won the 23rd and final edition of the Champions Trophy. The Oranje was much too strong for Australia in Chinese Changzhou and crushed them 5-1.

For the Netherlands Eva de Goede from Zeist and Xan de Waard from the Bilthovense SCHC scored in the first half. After the break, Maddy Fitzpatrick hit back for Australia, but in the 43rd minute, Lauren Stam scored from a narrow angle, before Maxime Kerstholt and Maria Verschoor added goals.

The Oranje won all six games in China. The group match with Australia, the number three team in the world ranking, ended in a 3-0 victory.

Besides SCHCs De Goede, SCHC players Laurien Leurink and Ginella Zerbo also played in the winning team. Margot Zuidhof and Renée van Laarhoven from Kampong were in the squad as well as keeper Josine Koning from Amersfoort.

In the new league, the Dutch men and women on Wednesday 10 April the Dutch hockey players take on China on Kampong’s field.

A day later, it is the Dutch men’s turn, when in the group stage, the Dutch take on Pakistan. The four best countries from the competition will go to the final round which will take place in Amstelveen at the end of June.

The Hockey Pro League is the replacement for the Champions Trophy and the final tournaments of the World Hockey League. It is a competition between nine of the strongest hockey nations in the world among men and women.

The FIH believe the FIH Pro League will transform the landscape of international hockey because hockey fans the world over will be able to watch their favourite sport for an extended period each year. Moreover, those fans whose team is participating have the chance to be part of the noise and sheer excitement of watching their team regularly in their home country.
