Utrecht amateur club DHSC have named their Sportpark after former player, Wesley Sneijder.
The city authorities have announced that The Sportpark Thorbeckepark in the Utrecht district of Ondiep will be renamed after Wesley Sneijder. The Sports Park is currently the home ground of the amateur club DHSC.
DHSC originated from DOS, and was the first club that Sneijder played for. The 34-year-old midfielder is now playing for the Qatari team, Al-Gharafa and left the amateur club in 1991 for the Ajax academy.
The 134 capped international, who retired from national football last year, says that he is honoured that from now on DHSC will play at Sportpark Wesley Sneijder and that his heart has always remained red and white for the city of Utrecht.
Currently, Sneijders younger brother Rodney plays for DHSC and his older brother Jeffrey is assistant coach of the team.
Rodney Sneijder earlier played in the Eredivisie for both FC Utrecht and RKC Waalwijk.
Wesley Sneijder is very proud that the sports complex has been named after him in what he calls ‘his’ Ondiep, and because it came from an idea of a group of local residents, it is even more special for him. He hopes that children and young people will be stimulated into playing sports as a consequence.
The former Sportpark Thorbeckepark was built in 2007 and is located in the district of Ondiep and the.municipality is still speaking with Sneijder, as well as consulting with the district council and the Sports Park about an official unveiling of the new Sportpark Wesley Sneijder, later this year.
