Fortuna were looking for their first win of the season and after only three minutes they got a good chance when Andrija Novakovich found himself in space, but the striker could only shoot into the side netting. Moments later, Novakovich this time forced David Jensen into a fine save.

Utrecht came into the game after half time and they took the lead in the 68th minute with Urby Emanuelson firing past Alexei Koselev to score his first Eredivisie goal for eight years, but the lead only lasted for five minutes before Novakovich fired in an equaliser for Fortuna Sittard to earn them a 1-1 draw. Utrecht now have five points from four games and move up to 11th place in the Eredivisie.
