Spakenburg are giantkillers in KNVB Cup

Last updated by

Utrecht regions Spakenburg FC have qualified for the second round of the KNVB Cup. The Second division defeated DFS from Opheusden tonight, 3-0.

At halftime, the Blauwen led 1-0 through a goal by Tom van der Neut. Mike Vreekamp and Olaf van der Sande narrowly failed to increase the lead.

After half-time, Spakenburg appeared to relax, possibly looking forward to the derby against IJsselmeervogels on Saturday. The level of play dropped and DFS pressed for an equaliser, but with twenty minutes left before time, Kevin Sterling put an end to their hopes with Spakenburgs second goal.

DFS continued to press and were close to scoring twice, but keeper Jordy Deckers kept them out and in injury time Olaf van der Sande sealed the win with a penalty to make it 3-0.

So, a great win for Spakenburg against opponents from a higher league, but Spakenburg will be hoping for an even bigger club in the next round. Unfortunately there but there are injury concerns for Saturday’s derby. Giovanni Gravenbeek with a strained hamstring and Tom Oostinjen with a calf problem were injured and are doubtful for the big game.
