FC Utrecht struggle to claim win over FC Groningen

Last updated by

FC Utrecht barely managed to stand their ground today during their Premier League home match today against FC Groningen.

The away side had most of the first half in hand missing what could have been an easy point led by forwards Tjarron Chery and Robbin Ruiter.

Utrecht were able to claim a penalty kick just after half time after a hand ball by Michael de Leeuw of FC Groningen. That ball was deflected off the woodwork.

Utrecht continued to dominate most of the second half with Jan Toornstra’s free kick coming off the post. The woodwork managed to save another sliding kick by Chery of Groningen.

The winning goal came from Johan Martensson of FC Utrecht who managed to drill in a screamer from 25 yards out of the box after a lay up pass from Steve de Ridder.

The match ended thus 1-0 to the home side reviving Utrecht from the bottom of the league and back into 13th position.
