Ellen van Dijk takes Bronze

Last updated by

Utrechts very own Ellen van Dijk was disappointed to finish third behind Anna van der Breggen’s ‘perfect ride’ as she took the bronze medal in this years road World Championships in Innsbruck, Austria.

Having had great success recently at La Vuelta in Spain, the Team Sunweb rider who won her first world title on the track in the scratch race in 2008 and is a five times world champion had set her targets high this season hoping to win the World Championship. She was well in the race for first place for some time and after a fall shook some of the other leading riders she was left in a breakaway of six. As Breggen put on the pressure all riders were dropped as she stormed home. Van Dijk made an impressive effort to take the medal. Though disappointed I’m sure that at the seasons end she will look back at her work with some pride.

Fellow Dutch rider Annemiek van Vleuten suffered a serious knee injury in the fall, but picked herself up to finish seventh behind Breggen. Treatment at the local hospital showed that the 35-year-old Dutch rider had a leg fracture and she had to be taken from the course in a wheelchair.
