DOVO out after penalty thriller against Urk

Last updated by

More news from the KNVB cup as another Utrecht team battled this time against a team from a lower league. This time it didn’t turn out so well as unlike Spakenburg who beat a higher league team, DOVO were not strong enough to beat lower league Urk who were too strong in Veenendaal. The match ended 2-2, the Flevolanders won 5-4 after a penalty shoot out.

Riekelt Jan Brands put Urk in the lead in the beginning of the second half. DOVO had not played well before that. It wasn’t until the sixtieth minute that the team of coach Gert Kruys had their first chance of the match which was really disappointing because DOVO plays a level higher than Urk

But the team showed resilience: Joshua Patrick scored the equalizer after 83 minutes. In the extension Urk were showing signs of fatigue and DOVO took the iniaitive. It was Patrick who scored to put DOVO 2-1 up..

But then things went badly wrong when Lars Middelwijk of DOVO got his second yellow card and was sent off. With a man up, Urk managed to score the equalizer as Riekelt Nentjes took a free kick and scored when DOVO goalkeeper Rodney Ubbergen made a complete mess of the save.

The subsequent penalty shootout was won by Urk 5-4. DOVO’s Marley Berkvens missed the final penalty, after which there was no return.
