Utrecht Remembrance of the Dead

Last updated by

On this day of all days we need to remember our past and how the horrors of war should never be forgotten.

WANTED: child who wants to ignite the flame at the Remembrance of the Dead

The Utrecht May 4 commemoration committee is looking for a child aged between 10 and 14 years old who would like to ignite the flame on Domplein just before eight o’clock on May 4.

The committee therefore is organizing a writing competition; the child with the most beautiful story will be given the honour of lighting the memorial flame with a torch.

Annually on 4 May, Utrecht commemorates all Dutch war victims who were killed or wounded in the Netherlands or anywhere in the world, since the outbreak of the Second World War and also in later war situations and peace missions. At eight o’clock they will have two minutes of silence. Just before that, they will light a flame that stands next to the monument during the memorial.

Previously the committee would have chosen a child or young person from the audience who wanted to do this, but this year we want to give all Utrecht children the chance to ignite the flame. That is why they invite children to write a story. That story must be about peace and freedom, and how we can ensure that we can continue to live in peace and freedom in Utrecht for the next hundred years.

The best stories will appear on the website of the committee and the child who writes the very best story will light the flame on 4 May!

Mayor Jan van Zanen and two members of the committee will sit on the jury.

Send your story to secretaris@4meiutrecht.nl before Saturday 20 April. The conditions for the competition can be found on our website.
