Utrecht: Major renovation underway at Hoog Catharijne

Last updated by

The royal BAM group have managed to acquire a contract to construct a large-scale underground car park and new retail spaces for the revamped Hoog Catharijne indoor shopping centre.

The Dutch-based contractor has been commissioned by Corio Vastgoed Ontwikkeling; a company that specialises in retail property. The project is already underway and is expected to be completed by 2019.

When completed, the Hoog Catharijne shopping center and the city will be integrated as one made possible by two new boulevards that will run parallel through the new station providing direct access to the city centre.

The five-story structure in its entirety will include some 1,300 parking spaces, 42,000m² of retail and shopping space and another 9,000m² of hotel space. BAM will also be responsible for 60 homes which have been commissioned by a third party.

The parking lot will lot, when it is complete, is expected to employ innovative technology and will span two stories underground.
