Utrecht invests to expand city’s free Wi-Fi network

Last updated by

As far as Utrecht mayor Jan van Zanan and the municipality are concerned, Utrecht should provide free Wi-Fi across the entire city. Anyone who visits the city including residents will be able to make unlimited use of the new public network.

The municipality already offers free Wi-Fi at four public squares namely Neude, Vredenburg, Town Hall and Cathedral Square since July 2013.

These spots have become particularly popular among international visitors, hence the decision to expand the free public network.

Alderman Mirjam de Rijk commented, “The Wi-Fi network in the inner city should become an open network for users who do not want to be pushed into commercial deals.” The Utrecht municipality will be investing 100,000 euros towards the installation of the physical part of the network.
