Utrecht chooses new mayor to succeed Aleid Wolfsen

Jan van Zanen was appointed new mayor to the city of Utrecht on Tuesday after Aleid Wolfsen decided to resign from his post earlier this year. A total of 26 applicants applied for the position.

Jan van Zanen is a member of the VVD (People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy) and has held the position of party chairman from November 2003 to May 2008. Jan was highly recommended to take the seat having already held a mayor position for the city of Amstelveen for the past 8 years. From 1998 to 2005, he was also the alderman of Finance and Economic Affairs.

Jan van Zanen grew up in the township of Edam-Volendam. He studied law at the Free University of Amsterdam and at the Cornell University in New York.

The position is expected to be handed over on 1 January, 2014.
