Utrecht Buurtkerk Warms Homeless

Last updated by

I read on the internet about a wonderful initiative from a church in Utrecht to help those in need during the cold winter months in the city. They go about the streets and hang up coats for the homeless people in Utrecht

Warm coats were hung up yesterday in several places in Utrecht. The initiative comes from the Buurtkerk, an evangelical church that wants to help the homeless and the poor in the cold winter months.

The volunteers from the Buurtkerk cycled throughout Utrecht with piles of jackets.  Their pastor said that they had a warm place in their hearts for the vulnerable people who needed support from them in the cold winter months.

Already every Saturday the church distributes food and organizes a clothing fair for homeless and vulnerable people. They see that more and more people are coming to these but they have also noticed that there is a large group that do not make it to these sessions and so by going out into the city with the coats they hope to do even more good.

‘Many coats are already gone’

At the end of the day many of the coats had gone and the pastor hoped that they had gone to those who really needed them and that the better off people had left them hanging. We can but hope! The Buurtkerk also hung a note on each coat, with an invitation to the weekly clothing and food bank. They are hoping this will be a success, but they might have to do it more often,

The great thing about the Buurtkerk is that they always try to come up with something creative, especially around the holidays:

On Christmas Day they will be organizing a free Christmas service with lots of food.
