Number of welfare dependents on the decrease

Last updated by

Unemployment in Utrecht has been on the decrease recently based on recent statistics. The number of welfare dependents dropped significantly in the third quarter of 2015 despite the fact that the lower educated are having more difficulty finding a job.

The decrease in unemployment can be largely contributed to the municipality’s efforts in helping the unemployed take up some form of employment activity while they are on benefits. In most cases, they may not be employed on a full-time basis but their welfare is being supplemented through their part-time activities.

Many of the unemployed possess some kind of learning or social disability which prevents them from being able to fulfill the requirements of a job sufficiently. Most of the unemployed also belong to youth groups which are more reluctant to maintain a stable job due to personal circumstances or problems at home.
