The national butterfly count is fully underway in Utrecht with the number of spottings already having surpassed last years record. At least a quarter of the thousand registrants have spotted butterflies in their gardens.

The data is coming in at the rate of 11 butterflies per 15 mins.At least four species per garden owner have been recorded so far. The most commonly seen are ‘the little fox’, ‘the peacock’, and ‘the atlanta’. The largest butterfly, ‘the swallowtail’, has been spotted 9 times so far.

The contributions are a good indicator for scientists to better estimate how well nature is doing.
