Millions Spent for Unsuccessful Cultural Capital Campaign
Last updated by
The city and province of Utrecht have invested more millions of funding in cultural projects than they previously thought. In the last 9 years, a total of 35 million in public money has gone to the foundation “Peace of Utrecht”. This is a big art and culture program that can lead to capturing the prestigious title of European Capital of Culture 2018, reports the Algemeen Dagblad/Utrecht Newspaper.
Unfortunately, the nomination of Utrecht for the title of European Capital of Culture ended early this year, inglorious. According to the report the Utrecht committee was passionless and lacked any sense of importance during their presentation in late November. The Utrecht prayer “trust the future, create your city” was not innovative or creative enough and lacked an exciting artistic vision. Furthermore, the European element was not strong enough and the jury wondered what will remain of the program after the year 2018. Lastly, the management structure of the committee was unclear.
The 35 million euro went to various large and small culture projects. Also, much money was spent on personnel, accommodations and publicity. However, the city and province of Utrecht argue that is incorrect. They say the grants total only 27.5 million.
