Mayor Jan van Zanen not in favour of fireworks ban

Utrecht Mayor Jan van Zanen is not in favor of a fireworks ban. The mayor had responded to a call from his colleague Piet Buinooge, the mayor of Alkmaar, who proposed the nationwide ban.

According to Van Zanen, the ban will not work. He made the announcement on Radio M Utrecht.

“I do not believe in the ban. Fireworks are not such a terrible thing unless it’s done right,” commented Van Zanen.

Zanen also expressed his discontent regarding the number of car fires in the city in recent years.

“I’m not happy with it. Last year 14 and this year there were 33 cars set on fire. It is a peculiar form of aggression which defies the meaning of festivity.”
