90 euro fine for driving an old car in Utrecht city centre

Diesel cars built before 2001 are no longer welcome in Utrechts city centre. The city considers them a threat to the environment and has thus created a so-called environmental zone. Entering the zone with a diesel car from before 2001 could cost the driver 90 euro’s.
With the environmental zone, Utrecht follows an example set by several German cities. They have been experimenting with the concept and saw a decrease in air pollution. Utrecht hopes to achieve the same results.
For owners of old diesel cars living in the city centre, a special arrangement will be made. They can turn in their old car and het a new – clean – one for a reduced price.
