Utrecht University has once again been named the best research university in the Netherlands. It is the thirteenth consecutive year that Utrecht has established itself as a prime destination for students. The prestigious list of 500 universities is prepared annually by the researchers at Jiaotong University in Shanghai.

On the global rank list, Utrecht University now ranks number 56 in the world falling back a few places from last year followed by the University of Groningen at spot 75 and then Leiden University at 82.

Just four European Universities have made it to the top 20; the latter being American Universities. The top five places were attributed to Harvard, Stanford, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Berkeley and Cambridge, UK.

The researchers from Shanghai take a number of factors into consideration when compiling the list including the number of Nobel prizes awarded and the number of scientific articles published in designated journals.
