Scientists find more economical method to produce medicine against Pompe disease

Last updated by

Scientists from the University of Utrecht have discovered a new, more economical method, to produce the drug that tackles the Pompe disease. The article was published in the Argos on Saturday afternoon.

Only a small amount has been produced so far using the new method although it is estimated that it will be at least two years before the approach is fully adapted.

As of today, the medicine (Myozyme) is far too expensive for the average patient costing anywhere between 400,000 to 700,000 euro for the entire treatment. Using the new technique, the average price for production will total to just around 4,000 euro according to Professor Huub Schellekens, initiator of the investigation.

“The initial investment to start producing the drug more cost-effectively has amounted to 1.3 billion euros so far,” claimed a spokesman for the producing company, ‘Genzyme’.

No profits have been booked so far however you can just imagine the benefits of being able to produce a drug at just a small fraction of what the cost used to be. Now that’s a milestone in the world of medicine, wouldn’t you agree?

It would have been nice if something about how the new method differs from the old method was stated?
