Groundwater extraction contributes to global rise in sea levels

Groundwater depletion is becoming the most important contributing factor to rises in terrestrial sea-levels as far as researchers from the University of Utrecht are concerned.

Doubled figures have been recorded in the depletion of groundwater reserves that have been directly related to continued population growth resulting in the increased demand of drinking water derived from groundwater reservoirs. The problem is that most of the water pumped up from deep underground pools evaporates into the air or flows into rivers that ultimately feed back into the seas.

Scientists did not consider terrestrial water an important part of the sea level problem because they previously believed that these effects cancelled each other out. The Utrecht study however now suggests that continued groundwater pumping will cause a global sea level rise (SLR) of about 0.8 millimeters per year by 2050.
