Stairway to Heaven is officially history

Last updated 3 months ago by UtrechtCentral.com

The iconic Utrecht café Stairway, formerly known as ‘Stairway to Heaven’, will officially close from today onward.

Henk Westbroek and his wife Julia Harris have transferred ownership of the location to their daughter and her partner. Renovations under the new leadership will start as soon as possible giving way to a new concept and a matching name.

Henk Westbroek, who became popular as a musical artist in the Netherlands in the seventies with his band ‘Het Goede Doel’, created Stairway to Heaven with the intention to set up a American Rock Bar concept similar to the Hard Rock Café.

The original concept featured signed musical instruments and other memorabilia hanging on the walls in memory of rock legends of that era. Over 750 well known artists including Alanis Morisette, Herman Brood, Shania Twain and Golden Earring were just some of the stars that performed there.

“Last year my wife and I decided to retire after the 25th anniversary of Stairway. Julia and I would like to thank everyone who came to us for a drink, eat or enjoy live music,” Henk Westbroek told on social media.

The new business owners, Chrissie Westbroek and her partner Dani Aguilera are going to rebuild the business, change the concept and give it a new name. They believe that Utrecht is ready for something new. The renovations are expected to take up to six weeks.
