Henk Westbroek’s music memorabilia collection sells for 135,000

Last updated 5 years ago by UtrechtCentral.com

[gard align=”right”]The music memorabilia collection of Henk Westbroek went up for auction this week raising some 135,000 euros. The auction, with a total of 150 lots including 45 autographed guitars, gold records and concert posters, was held online on a site called Catawiki. See the auction results here!

According to Catawiki, Westbroek’s collection has formed part of one of the most impressive auctions we have held in a long time. So many autographed guitars from famous international artists come together under the hammer attracting the attention of collectors and fans from around the world.

The best selling item was undoubtedly a guitar of Kurt Cobain which went for more than 15,000 euros. Westbroek had bought the instrument shortly after the grunge artist committed suicide in 1994. Other guitars which also sold for a few thousand euro included autographs from band members such as Aerosmith, ZZ Top and Bon Jovi.

A golden record of the single Light My Fire by The Doors was sold for 3,500 euro. Golden records from Pink Floyd and The Eagles went for 2,900 and 2,744 euros respectively.

Westbroek had collected rock memorabilia for years which he hung in his Utrecht café Stairway to Heaven. He purchased most of his items at auctions, but also regularly welcomed artists to sign guitars he had bought each time an artist was to appear on his radio show. Artists would commonly play something on the guitar and then leave an autograph and message behind on the instrument.

Another rare item was a painting called “Dead Rock Stars”, which hung at the Stairway to Heaven for many years sold for 1,500 euro. The piece includes stars like Freddie Mercury, Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison.

Stairway to Heaven is no longer a true rock café and considering Westbroek had no room left to store the items, he decided that holding an auction would be the best decision.
