The Apollo Hotel, located at the corner of Vredenburg and Lange Viestraat, has plans to refurbish and expand. The announcement was confirmed by Utrecht Alderman Klaas Verschuure.

The building, which was called Hotel Smits during its inception, was completed in 1954, and had a total of 90 rooms. The building still bears the name of Restaurant Smits on the roof which can be seen from street level.

The renovations are necessary in order to modernise the building in its entirety. Extra attention will be given to details like quality, sustainability and energy efficiency. Upon completion, the building will become an added visual attraction to the surrounding area. The facelift will include the addition of another 35 rooms to the hotel.
