What caused the confusion at Utrecht Marathon?

Last updated 4 weeks ago by Michael Darmanin

[gard] The 38th Utrecht Marathon, powered by Utrecht Science Park, took place on the 12th of May 2019. Confusion reigned the event when the runners for the 10km course (¼ marathon) were mistakenly steered on to a wrong route and instead of turning right into Westerkade, went straight on ahead into the street Bleekstraat, and consequently ended up in traffic where the roads had not been blocked off as they were not included in the marathon route. And eventually they came across the runners taking the 20km course (half marathon), crowding the route. The chaos resulted in the participants running much longer distances than what they had trained for. Utrechter Jeroen Bakker, the winner of the 10km course, was the only one who ran on the right route.

Johan Horst (42.195kms) at 02:50:44, Vincent Rono (21.097kms) at 01:02:55 and Tommaso Nicolai(1.5kms) at 00:05:09 were the first to finish in the Full Marathon, Half Marathon and Mini Marathon respectively.

On the official website for the Utrecht Marathon (www.utrechtmarathon.com), the organizers while conveying there sincere regret and apologies for the mishap have announced that the results for the ¼ marathon will not be published. Though initially thought to be caused by human error, not giving any reason for the confusion, the organizers have offered compensation to the participants of the ¼ marathon in the form of a free entry ticket to the next year’s marathon, a free photo certificate in their latest edition of Marathon Photos and a refund to participants who have registered for an engraved medal through the registration form.

The event this year was organized by Golazo Sports Nederland. This is their first year organizing the event. Approximately 6000 people took part in the marathon. The run raised €124,914 in donations for the cancer treatment institute, KWF Kankerbestrijding. The money will go to Prinses Ma̒xima Centrum to fund research for kids with cancer.

A complete bookworm all my life I am looking forward to putting my literary knowledge to good use in bringing relevant information to the English-speaking public in Utrecht through this informative website.
